NRA First Steps

NRA First Steps is a 4-hour pistol workshop where safe gun handling, pistol shooting fundamentals, and familiarity with pistol parts and maintenance elevate your comfort with a pistol.

NRA First Steps covers topics for people with little or no firearms experience.

Safe Gun Handling

In NRA First Steps, we’ll review key safety rules. Then, we’ll teach you how to safely handle your pistol. This includes disassembly, inspection, loading, unloading, and holstering. Learning these skills with expert help reduces accidents and promotes responsible gun use.

Pistol Parts

You’ll learn the role of each part, which boosts your gun-handling confidence and safety. In NRA First Steps, we discuss parts like the magazine release, trigger, and safety. Proper identification helps prevent accidental discharges.

Pistol Maintenance

NRA First Steps delves into the fundamentals of cleaning, focusing on removing debris that can cause jams and malfunctions. In a self-defense situation, a reliable firearm is critical. You’ll learn techniques for proper cleaning and lubrication.

How to Aim

NRA First Steps introduces you to the fundamentals of aiming a handgun. By isolating and improving these elements, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of what influences your shot placement and how to make accurate and controlled shots.

To attend NRA First Steps, you must meet the following:

Student Requirements

  • Be 21+ years of age & a U.S. citizen or legal resident
  • Be legally allowed to own a firearm in the state of Florida
  • Be able to operate a firearm safely
  • Complete a liability waiver before the start of the class
  • A valid government-issued ID or driver’s license
  • Please wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes. Also, choose pants or shorts with belt loops. Avoid sandals or open-toed shoes.

Firearm & Gear Requirements

  • Semi-auto pistol (22LR, 9MM, .380, 40MM, or .45ACP)
  • (3) magazines
  • 100 to 150 rounds of ammunition
  • Outside the Waistband holster
  • (2) Pistol Magazine pouches
  • A Sturdy Belt (able to hold up the weight of your gear)
  • Eye & ear protection
